This is Sheldon

I am a computational biologist, based at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. I am trained as a geneticist and phylogeneticist and my interests are focused on comparative genomics and evolution. I use bioinformatics techniques extensively for genome analysis pipelines, genome annotation, and comparative genomics. I develop and use scientific software tools, with a special emphasis on data visualization. I also do research in genome structure and evolution and have ongoing collaborations with large-scale cross-species RNAi, EST-based gene expression analysis, and evolution of duplicated gene pairs. In role as the scientific lead of the iPlant Tree of Life engagement team, I manage eight ongoing collaborative research projects focused primarily on the scale up and analysis of the tree of life for 500,000 green plant species. I am also active in Generic Model Organism Database (GMOD) Project.

I am an open source and data interoperability advocate and contribute to a number of collaborative software development projects. I also do outreach to promote adoption of GMOD tools and software, in particular the Generic Synteny Browser (GBrowse_syn), for which I teach at the GMOD summer schools and put on workshops at international conferences, such as the Plant and Animal Genomes meeting and the meeting of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution (SMBE) meeting. I am a member of a phylogenetics data interoperability colloboration (evoIO), which recently organized a phyloinformatics "VoCamp" that focused on ontologies and meta-data management for phylogenetics and taxonomy data.
