Joshua Orvis

Bioinformatics software engineer
Institute for Genome Sciences
Baltimore, MD

Joshua's undergraduate work was in microbiology at the University of Oklahoma and he's currently wrapping up a graduate degree in bioinformatics at Johns Hopkins. He joined The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in 2004 and moved on to the Institute for Genome Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine after TIGR was merged into the JCVI.

Joshua teaches classes in Perl, Bioinformatics and web development at the University of Maryland as well as some smaller local colleges. His primary work at IGS involves:

  • prokaryotic and eukaryotic genome annotation
  • project lead for the distributed grid computing platform Ergatis
  • data modeling and management
  • metagenomic annotation

When he's not working he's probably playing with his new son Xander, playing Eve, or boring someone with talk about cars or motorcycles.
