Bovine Genome Database Systems Infrastructure

Poster presented at PAG 2010 on the infrastructure of the Bovine Genome Database. Poster by Jaideep P. Sundaram, Christopher P. Childers, Justin T. Reese, Donald C. Vile, Christine G. Elsik

Abstract

We present the tools and technologies that will be integrated into the infrastructure that supports the Bovine Genome Database (BGD; http://bovinegenome.org). In collaboration with the bovine community we will develop an ontology that will standardize the data representation and thus facilitate communication with the community as well as the integration of disparate data repositories. The system now supports the exportation of computational analysis and annotation data in formats like GFF3, chado-XML and BSML. The next phase of data-sharing will include RDF/OWL to describe the annotation as well as the characteristics of the workflows which generated the results of the computational analyses. This will provide richer information for consumption by the community as well as semi-automated discoveries by autonomous expert systems. We will work closely with collaborators to develop and refine our web service layer which will provide access to our resources and repositories and those of participating members. All of these efforts will significantly improve the manner in which new and existing data sets will be incorporated into the system as well as make the system more discoverable, open and accessible to diverse scientific communities.
